ALEXIS HINIKER
Co-Design with Preschoolers

Like any other user group, children improve the design of the technology they use when they are active partners and participants in its creation. However, including preschoolers' voices in the design process can be a challenge, because they engage with the world in ways that differ from adult users. My work explores new design methods to support very young children in coming up with design ideas, creating artifacts, reflecting on their own needs, interests, and values, and
building on one another's ideas. Together with Kiley Sobel, of the University of Washington, and Bongshin Lee, of Microsoft research, I am adapting existing design methods and evolving them for this user group.
